Judy Poey didn’t see herself working in the nonprofit world when she started her career and earned her Ph.D. in gerontology. Armed with her past experiences and vast skills, plus a determination to be more hands-on in her community, Judy joined the United Way team.
“When the pandemic happened, being able to be in a position to be of service was really powerful.” Judy saw the extraordinary efforts United Way devoted to responding to the COVID crisis. “It wasn’t just the immediate response to meet the incredible needs, but recovery efforts that showed how committed this organization is to supporting our neighbors for the long term.”
She admits she wasn’t very familiar with United Way before she arrived, but has since marveled at the work they do, and the influence they have. “The boots-on-the-ground, grassroots work helping people directly in the community is amazing. And they also have access to boardrooms, government entities, universities, and so much more. Their ability to bring all of these pieces together to serve the people is powerful.”
She credits the team–people who have a vested interest in our communities and are passionate about what they do.. As for the next 100 years? Judy sees United Way continuing to innovate in new ways to serve people across Greater Baltimore, tackle new and ongoing challenges, and provide what’s needed, where it’s needed.
And if you’re able, donate a few dollars to support Judy’s work—and the work of all of our employees and volunteers, as we celebrate 100 years of impact.
