Since childhood, I’ve known my purpose in life is to help others. When I ventured into corporate America two years after graduating high school, I felt that I had taken the first step toward fulfilling this purpose by landing a job with Johns Hopkins Healthcare. However, once I joined the company, I still felt unsure of myself. Being one of the youngest employees in my division and having the least amount of experience made me feel out of place. Despite this, I was certain of one thing: I had achieved my dream job, and I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity to make a difference.
After stepping out of my comfort zone and connecting with a few colleagues, I was invited to my first United Way networking event. That St. Patrick’s Day event, nearly 14 years ago, provided my first glimpse into how I could fulfill my lifelong purpose. Little did I know that joining as an Emerging Leaders United (ELU) member would open doors and place me in rooms I had only dreamed of.
I joined United Way because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others, but it has truly come full circle. This organization has greatly impacted my own life. I see my nephews reflected in the faces of Young Men’s United members. I see childhood friends like Eric Brown leading Neighborhood United efforts through his Man Up Mission in my old neighborhoods. I see my purpose in life being fulfilled, and I couldn’t be prouder to share that I am a proud member of the United Way of Central Maryland.
Emerging Leaders United is United Way of Central Maryland’s network of passionate young professionals and donor volunteers who want to improve lives and neighborhoods. This group connects members to opportunities to support United Way’s mission, and provides valuable professional and personal development, volunteer, and social events throughout the year.
