At United Way of Central Maryland, we’re proud to work alongside incredible volunteers who show up, give back, and make a meaningful impact across our region. Lori Villegas is one volunteer whose connection to United Way spans more than 15 years.
Lori’s journey began with a desire to give her time and resources more intentionally. “I wanted my giving to be mindful and thoughtful,” she shared. “The more I learned about United Way, the more I loved the work being done in the community.”
Over the years, Lori has contributed in countless ways, including reading to students, helping build school libraries, painting classrooms, and preparing meals. Much of her service has been through our membership groups, Women United and the Tocqueville Society, which connect passionate individuals to meaningful opportunities to give back.
This summer, Lori and her family joined United Way board members and fellow volunteers at Filbert Street Garden. This vibrant community space provides fresh produce and environmental education to local residents. Volunteers spent the day weeding, planting, and maintaining the garden to ensure it continues to thrive as a resource for the community.
Reflecting on the experience, Lori said it was a great opportunity for leaders and families to come together, roll up their sleeves, connect with neighbors, and help Baltimore grow stronger. “Every time we come, it feels like we’re making a small but real difference.”
We’re deeply grateful to our board members and membership groups for their ongoing dedication to building stronger communities. If you’re inspired by their work, we invite you to join us at an upcoming volunteer opportunity and be part of the change in Central Maryland.
