I’m a Marine veteran, honorably discharged in 1978. I’ve worked hard all my life and never had trouble with the law—until the pandemic, when life became unstable and I found myself facing a criminal charge. I spent three months in the Baltimore Detention Center, wondering how I got there and what came next.
When the judge found out I was a veteran, I was referred to the Central Maryland Regional Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) program. They understand that veterans have unique challenges—like PTSD, mental health struggles, substance use—that can lead to criminal charges. Instead of punishment, VTC gave me accountability, support, and a path forward.
Through the program, I got therapy and benefits I’d never known I qualified for and found a community that truly cared about me.
You can help a local veteran with your support.
Today, I train service dogs for veterans and am a mentor to others in the program. Because someone stood up for me, I now stand up for others.
What began in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County has grown to help veterans in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties. That means more veterans can get the second chance they deserve.
But we need your help. Your donation helps fund this compassionate justice. It helps veterans like me heal, rebuild, and give back.
If you’ve ever wondered how to truly honor a veteran—this is how.
Please consider a donation today. You can be the reason a veteran finds hope and a second chance.
With gratitude,
William Shelton

P.S. I used to think court was a place of punishment. But the Veterans Treatment Court felt like home. Help make that feeling possible for more veterans.
This program is supported by a grant from the Maryland Judiciary’s Office of Problem-Solving Courts.
