At United Way of Central Maryland, we believe lasting change happens when people take action together. WJZ-TV joined us in that mission by spending a day of service in Brooklyn, Maryland, where their team supported local students, families, and neighborhoods.
The WJZ team began their day at Curtis Bay Elementary, helping teachers and staff prepare for the school year. They then visited Filbert Street Garden, a thriving community space that provides fresh produce, environmental education, and neighborhood connection. Volunteers shoveled hay and manure, tended to the garden beds, and learned more about the garden’s role in the community. The day ended at the local sports complex, where WJZ volunteers played soccer and led activities with neighborhood kids.
For Megan, who coordinated the day of service, the experience captured what community means. “The kids were so welcoming,” she said. “Playing soccer with them was my favorite moment of the day.”
Megan enjoys leading WJZ’s volunteer projects because she believes in kindness and action. “I believe in being kind and knowing you’re making it better,” she shared.
That spirit of kindness defines WJZ’s commitment to Baltimore. “People think of WJZ as that TV station on the top of the hill,” Megan said. “But we want people to know we’re one of them. We’re part of this community, and we’re committed to Baltimore and its people.”
United Way of Central Maryland is proud to partner with organizations like WJZ that not only share stories of community impact but also take part in creating them. When local leaders act together, they show that Baltimore’s strength comes from the people who care enough to make a difference.
