At United Way of Central Maryland, we have incredible volunteers who show up, give back, and make a real difference across our region.

In partnership with Carroll County Public Schools, Westminster Rescue Mission, and United Way of Central Maryland’s Carroll County RUN Board, Carroll County food distribution volunteers distribute food and household goods to hundreds of families in Taneytown and Union Bridge.
What began in September 2019 with 35 families grew into support of more than 125 households each month in Taneytown, and, since expanding in July 2024, around 80 families monthly in Union Bridge.
One leader describes the distributions as a “bridge in the community,” especially for older residents. With a high senior population, these events are more than just a place to receive groceries-they are a bright spot in the day. It’s a model that meets people where they are, removing transportation barriers and making resources accessible in rural communities.
The effort is powered by passionate volunteers who unite not for recognition but because they believe in the purpose. One of those volunteers is Kaushik Das, a Westminster resident who has served at the Union Bridge site for more than a year.
“It’s a simple task, but the beauty lies in its simplicity,” Kaushik shares. “You hand out food and know it will be used right away. The gratitude is immediate-you see it in their eyes and “Thank You’s.” That’s what keeps me coming back.”
Kaushik discovered United Way’s distribution through his workplace, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, but it quickly became more than a corporate initiative-it became personal. He speaks fondly of the camaraderie among fellow volunteers and partners like Ed, Jim, Caitlin, and the Westminster Rescue Mission team.
That sense of collaboration and community spirit defines the Carroll County distribution. It’s about showing up, month after month, to ensure people feel seen, supported, and cared for.
Thank you to Kaushik and all our volunteer superheroes in Carroll County! This work would not be possible without the commitment of our partners-Carroll County Public Schools, Westminster Rescue Mission, and the Carroll County RUN Board. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected Carroll County.
