The Way Home Recap
Since 2017, Leaders United have helped 67 individuals and families exit homelessness and move into new apartments with everything they need to start the next chapter in their lives. Over 60 of the original residents still live in the apartments.
From coffee mugs to shower curtains, Leaders United raised the funds to purchase home supplies from local Targets, then volunteered to set up the apartments. On Move In Day, residents stood on their brand new welcome mats, and opened the doors to find stocked kitchens, bathrooms, and the little touches like throw pillows on the sofa.
You wouldn’t think that a coffee cup or a roll of toilet paper could make such a difference. But it allows people who are often carrying little more than a duffle bag of personal items, to focus on their health and well-being—and not where their tube of toothpaste or plates will come from. This project takes that worry from their minds so they can begin to experience the comforts of a warm bed and roof over their head.
Hundreds of donors contributed over $70,000 through donations and purchases on site at Target. Hundreds of volunteer hand selected items as if they were for their own family and then set up each apartment with care, leaving welcome home notes for the residents they will never meet, but whom they have impacted greatly.
